Berna Harmse

Speciality: Oncology, Critical Care Nutrition and Post-surgery Medical Nutrition Therapy patients.

Qualification: Bsc Dietetics, Ms Dietetics


Berna completed her B.Sc Dietetics degree at the University of Potchefstroom in 2004 and obtained her Masters in Nutrition degree in 2007 at the University of Potchefstroom (the role of inflammation on the metabolic syndrome). 

She completed her community service year in 2005 at the Witrand Hospital. Since then she’s been in private practice at Panorama Medi-Clinic, Cape Town. She sees hospital patients on a referral basis and private practice patients.

She’s also involved at the University of Stellenbosch Tygerberg Campus on a regular basis as an external lecturer for undergraduate students and external examiner and supervisor for masters’ degree students.

She also does a lot of media work like contributing to various radio interviews and articles in magazines and media24. She was the president of the South African Dietetics Association (ADSA: 2011-2013) and the treasurer of SASPEN (the South African Society for Parenteral and Enteral nutrition).

Berna currently serves on the editorial board of the South African Journal of Clinical Nutrition (SAJCN) and works with the HDIG. She has been an ADSA member since 2006 and was the ADSA Executive committee CPD Portfolio representative in 2009-2011.

Her hobbies include reading and any crafts. She’s passionate about dietetics as a profession and enjoys sharing clear and concise nutrition messages to the public.
